Mark Slater co-founded Slater Investments in 1994 with Ralph Baber and is Chairman and Chief Investment Officer of Slater Investments, Chairing the Investment Committee. The company manages a hedge fund, two unit trusts, two OEIC's and portfolios for pension schemes, charities and high net worth individuals. Mark has also been the recipient of several industry awards. Prior to founding Slater Investments, Mark worked as a financial journalist with Analyst plc and the Investor's Chronicle. Also, in 1992, he helped research and edit a best-selling investment book "The Zulu Principle" for his father, Jim Slater, which focuses on identifying small to medium-sized growth companies. During his career, Mark has served on the boards of four public companies in which he has been a substantial shareholder. Mark has an MA in History from Cambridge University.
Chief Operating Officer
Ralph co-founded Slater Investments along with Mark Slater in 1994 and is Chief Operating Officer. Ralph is the Chairman of the Compliance & Risk and ESG Committees. He attends the Investment Committee, and also sits on the Operations and Pricing Committees. Ralph has a BSc (Hons) degree and is a qualified Chartered Accountant and member of the Chartered Securities Institute. He has served on several regulatory panels including the SFA Appeals Tribunal. Ralph was a manager at Price Waterhouse until he left to join a client, CAL Futures Limited, first as Finance Director and then, from 1987, as Managing Director. The company was one of Europe’s leading hedge fund managers and futures and options brokers. In 1995, the broking business was sold to Union plc where Ralph initially became an Executive Director. In 1997, he was promoted to Chief Executive. In 1998, Union plc bought World Invest, which had £2.6 billion of equity funds under management. In 2001, Union plc was acquired by a private group and Ralph was appointed Chairman.
Alastair originally qualified as a solicitor and practiced with Baker & McKenzie in London and in Asia. He moved into venture capital/private equity with NewMedia Spark (now Spark Venture Management) and then, with a small investor group, took control of Galahad Capital PLC which became a successful publicly quoted investment vehicle, with Alastair as Managing Director. He then founded Glendevon King Limited, a fund management company, and Eredene Capital PLC, an AIM-quoted investment company specialising in Indian Infrastructure projects prior to founding the Naisbitt King Group. Alastair also has an MSc in Finance from London Business School.
Ashley qualified as an Associate of The Chartered Insurance Institute in 1981 and subsequently, a Chartered Insurance Broker. Ashley commenced his career in 1977 with G H Hepburn & Co. Ltd in the Channel Islands. He returned to England in 1984 to establish Cox Hepburn Ltd, a corporate insurance broking business and an associated IFA business. These businesses were sold in 2003 and 2008. Ashley subsequently became a director of a commercial insurance broking entity, Denmark Green Ltd, and has since retired from that position.
Eric joined Slater Investments in October 2021 and is co-manager to the Slater Income Fund. Prior to this, Eric spent 10 years at Premier Miton running the Miton Income Fund. Previously he worked at Insight Investment (2005 to 2010) where he was involved in running the UK equity element of a range of large institutional mandates. He started his career at Gartmore (1995-2005), again working in UK equities, including managing the Gartmore UK Growth Fund. Eric holds an MA (Hons) in Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) from the University of Oxford and an MSc in Cognitive Science from the University of Edinburgh. He has completed the IMC and the IIMR and is an Associate of the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment.
Director of Research
Barrie Newton is a Director of Research and serves on the Investment Committee. Barrie obtained a BA Combined Honours Economics with Geography from University of Exeter. He obtained a MSc by Research (taken part time) from the School of Management at University of Bath (1969-1974). Barrie joined B S Stock Son & Co in 1969 as a trainee stock broker and became a partner in 1975. He remained a partner and subsequently became Head of Research with the succeeding companies, Stock & Orme and Stock Beech & Co Ltd. Barrie was responsible for smaller company research and corporate fund raising as well as some private client work. Barrie left Stock Beech in 1990 to co-found Rowan Dartington. Barrie, acting in the role of Managing Director, helped to develop the business to be a highly profitable and well diversified regional stockbroker, fund manager and major participant in AIM corporate finance. Barrie ran the largest and most successful client fund which outperformed its benchmark for 14 out of 15 years. Barrie concluded the sale of Rowan Dartington in 2006 and joined Slater Investments in 2008. Barrie is responsible for investment ideas and stock analysis.
Tim Freeborn is an equities analyst and joined Slater Investments in February 2017. Since qualifying as a Chartered Accountant, Tim has had a varied career. For many years he was a City writer at The Daily Mail, he has also edited an investment newsletter and contributed to Shares Magazine. This was followed by several years as a stockbroking analyst at Evolution Securities and Xcap Securities covering growth companies. Before joining Slater Investments, Tim spent four years as the Chief Financial Officer of Silence Therapeutics, an Aim listed biotech company, and latterly ran its laboratories in Berlin. Tim serves on the Investment Committee.
Head of Dealing & Investor Relations
Lisa chairs the Operations Committee and serves on the Investment and Pricing Committees, and is responsible for Dealing and Investor Relations. She achieved a BA (Hons) degree in Geography from Northumbria University and has spent over 20 years in the City, five of which were at Goldman Sachs. Lisa also worked as a Pan European Equity Sales Trader at Rabo Bank, Old Mutual Securities, Arbuthnot Securities and Seymour Pierce. Lisa joined Slater Investments in August 2013 and has a wealth of experience in UK mid and small cap equities.
Kathryn is a practising Solicitor, who qualified in 1997, and has extensive experience in financial services law and corporate governance. Following qualification, she moved to Union plc which had trading subsidiaries who, at that time, were regulated by the Bank of England, IMRO and the SFA. There she specialised in financial services law. She was appointed Company Secretary of the company in 1998 which coincided with the introduction of the first Combined Code on Corporate Governance. Most recently she has run her own Solicitors practice, been a Non-Executive Director to three AIM listed companies and Chair and Trustee of three defined benefit pension schemes. Kathryn is the firm’s General Counsel and Money Laundering Reporting Officer and serves on the Operations Committee, Compliance and Risk Committee and the ESG Committee.
Risk and ESG Officer
Liz serves on the Compliance & Risk, Operations and ESG Committees. Liz has a BA in International Studies and English from Fairfield University and a MSc in Finance from Johns Hopkins University. She previously worked as a client relationship manager with a wealth management advisor in the US. Liz earned the Certified Financial Planner® designation in 2009. She holds the CFA designation, the Certificate in Investment Performance Measurement (CIPM) designation and the Investment Management Certificate with the CFA Society UK. Liz joined Slater Investments in February 2010.
Senior Associate ESG
Christopher joined Slater Investments in June 2017 after studying Philosophy and Economics at University College Dublin. Christopher currently holds the CFA Level 1 and is studying for Level II. Christopher has previously completed the Investment Operations Certificate (IOC) from the Chartered Institute of Securities and Investments in 2018 and speaks two languages, French, and English. He sits on the ESG Committee.
Ugochukwu joined Slater Investments in August 2021, having graduated with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the University of Exeter and a master’s degree in Quantitative Finance at the CASS Business School. Ugochukwu is currently studying for his CFA qualification. He sits on the ESG Committee.
Head of Distribution
Jeremy joined the Business Development team at Slater Investments in September 2015. He graduated from the University of Bristol in 2009 with a BA (Hons) degree in Archaeology and spent a year working in corporate finance in Bangkok. Jeremy spent three and a half years in the City of London at private wealth manager, Charles Stanley & Co. His qualifications include the Investment Management Certificate, the CISI's Level 4 Investment Advice Diploma as well as the Level 3 Investment Operations Certificate. Jeremy has also passed the Financial Markets paper Level 6 of the CISI's Level 7 Chartered Wealth Manager qualification.
Loic joined Slater Investments in July 2021. Before joining Slater Investments, Loic joined PwC as a School Leaver Apprentice in 2018 and spent 3 years at PwC in their UK/US and UK/Jersey personal tax advisory teams as a Senior Associate. He previously completed his Level 3 Investment Operations Certificate (IOC) from the Chartered Institute of Securities and Investments and is now working towards his Level 4 Investment Advice Diploma (IAD).
Senior Manager of Operations
Klaudia joined Slater Investments in December 2012 and chairs the Pricing Committee. She also sits on the Operations, ESG and Compliance and Risk Committees. Klaudia has a BA (Hons) in Russian from Queen Mary University of London. She speaks three languages, Polish, Russian, and English. Klaudia has completed the Investment Operations Certificate (IOC) from the Chartered Institute of Securities and Investments and the Investment Management Certificate from the CFA Society UK.
Victoria is the Cyber Security Officer of Slater Investments. Victoria serves on the Compliance & Risk, Operations and Pricing committees. Victoria joined Slater Investments in July 2014 and has completed the Extended Investment Operations Certificate and the Certificate in Managing Cyber Security from the Chartered Institute of Securities and Investments. Victoria also completed the Investment Management Certificate with the CFA Society UK.
Yvonne joined Slater Investments in March 2015. Yvonne sits on the Pricing and Operations Committees and has a BSc in Biological Science from the University of Hertfordshire and speaks two languages, Vietnamese, and English. Yvonne completed the Investment Operations Certificate (IOC) in October 2015 and Level 4 Investment Advice Diploma (IAD) in November 2016 from the Chartered Institute of Securities and Investments.
Luke joined Slater Investments in May 2019 and has BA in History & Politics and an MA in International Conflict Analysis from the University of Kent, Canterbury. He has successfully completed his Level 3 Investment Operations Certificate (IOC) and Level 4 Investment Advice Diploma (IAD) with the Chartered Institute of Securities and Investments.
Matthew joined Slater in December 2020 having graduated from the University of Exeter where he studied BA Politics, Philosophy and Economics with a year in industrial placement, which he spent at Ernst & Young. Matthew previously completed his Level 3 Investment Operations Certificate (IOC) from the Chartered Institute of Securities and Investments and is now working towards his CFA Level I.
